This Filter Turns Diet Coke Into Water
You know when ice cubes melt in your soda and it gets all watery? This is not that.
In a quest to most healthily quench our thirst, one company has miniaturized the reverse osmosis technology that major water bottling plants use so that it fits onto our kitchen countertop. We're talking do-it-yourself Dasani, at-home water purification, stepping our drinking game up.
AquaTru is so powerful, in fact, that in one experiment, it filtered Diet Coke into drinkable (slightly "carbonated" in taste) water.
But before you see this "miracle" for yourself, a quick reminder of why it's so important: toxic tap water is not just a crisis that happened in Flint, Michigan.
Reportedly, the U.S. government revealed in recent years that our "optimal" levels of fluoridation in our tap water was way too high. Forty percent too high. Since 1962. Since 2011, at least, most large cities across the nation have reduced their levels.
Fluoride is one of the top 20 most abundant elements on earth and occurs naturally, in trace amounts, in fresh and salt water. Water utility companies began flooding our water with it however, apparently as a measure to reduce cavities in the teeth. The ill effects have included fluorosis, staining of the teeth.
According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, at extremely high levels, fluoride even causes neurotoxicity in adults -- showing definitive memory loss and stunted learning in rodents -- and damage to the endocrine system, which may lead to thyroid issues, early puberty and male infertility among other risks like to our cardiovascular health.
Studies in China revealed that children living in high-fluoride areas have a significantly lower IQ than those who live in a low-fluoride environment.
AquaTru removes more than 90 percent of fluoride, and other inorganic and organic chemicals and biological contaminants.
